President Mohammadu Buhari declares June 12, a national holiday and Democracy Day, to honour the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. He also, posthumously, decorates the chief with the nation’s highest honour and apologises to the Abiola family, on behalf of the government, for the wrong done to them.
Also posthumously decorated is distinguished human rights activist and lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi. Chief Abiola’s running-mate in the June 12 elections, Alhaji Babagana Kingibe is also honoured.
