Nigeria’s first Executive President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari has died, aged 93.
He passed away a few hours ago, on Friday, the 28th of December, 2018, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness. News of his death has been made public on his Twitter handle by his grandson, Bello Shagari,who writes:
“I regret announcing the death of my grandfather, HE Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who died right now after a brief illness at the National Hospital, Abuja.”
News of the elder statesman’s death has also been confirmed by the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Usman Shagari, was President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983, before he was overthrown in a military coup by then General Mohammadu Buhari, on December 31, 1983.
